With the help of Highland’s ground-breaking fleet electrification-as-a-service solution, districts and external fleet managers may quickly embrace environmentally-friendly student transportation by avoiding the up-front expenses and complexity of electrification.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) 2022 Clean School Bus Rebate Program awarded BLBD a $4,740,000 grant to help pay for its zero-emission electric school buses. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), which allocates $5 billion over five years for clean school bus transportation, includes this initiative as a provision.

For more than 2,400 clean school buses, the EPA recently granted money totaling almost $1 billion to school districts in all 50 states of the United States. The funding also help the recipients’ organizations build the necessary infrastructure for clean energy charging. In order to provide cleaner, healthier transportation choices to its students and communities, BLBD is assisted by EPA money in conjunction with Highland’s finance and services.

In order to achieve its objective of bringing the total cost of ownership of electric school bus fleets down to a level that is equal to or lower than the investment required for current diesel fleets, BLBD will work in conjunction with Highland Electric Fleets and jointly serve Hardin County CUSD #1.

The vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology that comes standard on BLBD Electric buses enables Highland to work with the local utility providers to manage vehicle charging and re-deliver stored energy to the grid as required. V2G initiatives assist in balancing grid load, enhancing grid resilience, and bringing down the overall cost of school districts’ fleets of electric buses.

How is BLBD changing things?

With upwards of 700 battery-operated, zero-emission school buses in circulation today, Blue Bird (BLBD) continues to be the industry leader in sustainable transportation. The whole line of electric school buses made by BLBD has a maximum seating capacity of 84 passengers and can go up to 120 miles on one charge. The time it takes for the buses to fully recharge differs based on the charging infrastructure.
